The Bee, local currency in Villeneuve sur Lot (France)

A handful of people take control of their local economy and create their own currency!

A new currency has been used in Villeneuve sur Lot since January 23rd, 2010. The Non-profit making organization, the « Act for the living », launches ”The Bee “, local complementary currency.

Ambitions: revitalize local trade, enhance social connections and reduce ecological impact (human impact on the environment).

How does it work? 1 bee = 1 euro. Euros can be converted into bees, which can be used to pay for purchases from local producers and traders, who are members of the association « Act for the living », such as market gardeners, fruit and cereals producers, bakers, farmers, wine growers, organic retailers of organic products,  health products, nature cure, sewing, cloths, books, etc. Every member must follow the association’ charter and commit himself / herself to put on the market more environmentally friendly products (bio, local,…). The manufacturers and traders who receive these bees can spend them by buying from other professionals who are also members of the association. Consequently, the currency does not damage the local system.

The Bee is “melting money”, non speculative, was created for use and not for saving. It devaluates by 2% every six months. In order to continue to use it, you need to buy a vignette which equals 2% of the bill’s value (you need to stick it on the banknote). Professionals who do not use the bees enough can give them back to the association in exchange of a devaluation of 2%. If they move away, consumers can also convert their bees into Euros with the same devaluation. The collected sums help pay the association functioning fees, the printing of bills, etc. … but also sponsor local projects.
